How often should you really wash colored hair?
Anyone who has just had their hair lifted to blonde or vivids asks the same question on day one: how often can the hair be washed without fading the color? Here is what the science — and what experienced colorists report — actually says.
The 72-hour rule
For the first 72 hours after color, do not wash at all. The cuticle is still settling and color molecules are still bonding. Cold water rinses are fine, shampoo is not.
After 72 hours
For vivid reds and pastel tones, washing once or twice a week is the realistic ceiling — these pigments simply rinse out fast. For blondes and natural brunettes, every other day is fine if you use a sulfate-free, color-safe shampoo and rinse with cool water.
The dry shampoo trap
Dry shampoo is fine in moderation. The trap is using it for 5 days in a row without ever rinsing — buildup at the roots actually accelerates fading because clients then over-shampoo on day 6 to "really clean."
Bonus tip
Once a week, use a purple or blue toning shampoo on blonde or balayage, and a red-violet conditioner on copper tones. It is the single biggest difference between freshly-colored hair at week 1 and freshly-colored hair at week 6.
